Being born and raised in Stoke-on-Trent it was inevitable that at some point in my career I'd be involved in the production of pottery. Indeed, my early work experience was in the production of ceramic transfers in Burslem, heart of the Staffordshire pottery industry. After my early apprenticeship I went on to study a BA Hons degree in Creative Arts, before embarking on a teaching career. In the last few years I have returned to the production of pottery, this time it's the production of intimate hand made pottery that drives me. All of my pots are individually handmade, and therefore unique. In addition all of the crockery and giftware can be personalised for weddings, birthdays or other special occasions with names and personal messages. The pottery is available to buy via my 'folksy' shop. The beauty of hand made pottery is the infinite variety of effects that occur in the clay and glaze during the firing process. Colours are affected by where the pot is placed in the kiln, as well as irregularities that occur during the application of the glaze. As a result the pots will not have the uniformity of mass produced items, but I believe that this is part of their charm! I make my pottery with the intention of creating something both functional and decorative. I use a stoneware clay which is reduction fired to a high temperature making it dishwasher, microwave and oven safe. Stoneware has stood the test of time and still remains fashionable today, perfect for any kitchen! Subscribe to my Facebook page to stay updated. See pottery being made at my Youtube channel. |
